On January 5, 1933, the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge began after a decade of dealing with political, financial, and technical challenges. The first task was to build two large anchorages for the bridge's cables, each filled with 270 million pounds of concrete and steel support components. The south tower, a massive undertaking, was situated in a challenging location 1,125 feet offshore, 110 feet deep, and exposed to strong currents.

To create the pier supporting the south tower, engineers poured concrete into a large form located in the fender. Divers searched the channel floor for a suitable location while a trestle extended from Fort Point. The bridge's towers, influenced by graceful Art Deco designs, became the world's tallest, reaching an impressive height of 746 feet each. This marked the beginning of the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. ( Golden
