The 2010 United States Senate election in Utah will take place on November 2, 2010 along with other elections to the United States Senate in other states as well as elections to the United States House of Representatives and various state and local elections. Incumbent Republican Senator Bob Bennett is seeking re-election to a fourth term.

Candidates[edit]

The filing period for candidates began March 12, 2010 and ended March 19, 2010. Candidates who had not filed by that date cannot appear on the ballot in November. Eleven candidates filed with the Office of the Lieutenant Governor. ^[1]

Caucus Meetings and Pre-convention Campaign[edit]

Both the Utah State Democratic Party and the Utah State Republican Party held statewide caucus meetings on March 23, 2010. Caucus meetings are grouped by legislative district and divided by precincts with each precinct electing delegates that attend the state nominating conventions. This year, the Republican caucuses were held in centralized legislative locations rather than neighborhood precints which had been used previously. Preliminary indications were that Republican opponents of Bennett would have a substantial number of delegates at the state nominating convention, jeopardizing his nomination. Many who attended the Republican caucuses did so with an "anybody-but-Bennett sentiment.^[10]^[11]^[12]

On April 2, 2010, ten of the eleven candidates appeared in Orem at the UVU debate. Granato, who was scheduled, failed to appear. Stout was frequently booed for his positions on improving education and reducing the debt through targeted government programs. Bennett began his comments by making reference to Lee's lack of business experience. It was a contentious debate which set the stage for the rest of the campaign before the state nominating conventions. 195 attendees participated in a straw poll, with Lee obtaining a commanding 50% and Bennett only 6.5%. ^[13]^[14]

Endorsements Prior to Convention[edit]

Bennett received endorsements from Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah, former U.S. Senator Jake Garn of Utah, former Speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich of Georgia, and former Governor Mitt Romney of Massachusetts.^[15]^[16]^[17]

Lee received endorsements from former House Majority Leader Dick Armey of Texas, Former Congressman Jim Hansen of Utah, Former Governor Norm Bangerter of Utah, Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, Utah State Senators Curt Bramble, Allen Christensen, Mark Madsen, Utah State Representatives John Dougall, Francis Gibson, Kerry Gibson, Craig Frank, Ken Sumsion, Todd Kiser, Mike Morley, Curt Oda, Ryan Wilcox, Carl Wimmer, Former Utah State Representative John Swallow, editor of conservative weblog RedState Erick Erickson, prominent conservative author and talk show host Mark Levin, and FreedomWorks PAC.^{[citation needed]}

Granato received most of his endorsements before Stout entered the race but include Representative Jim Matheson of Utah, Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon, Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker, Utah State Senator and Minority Leader Patricia Jones, Utah State Representative and Minority Leader David Litvack, State Senators Karen Mayne, Gene Davis, Ross Romero, Ben McAdams, Brent Goodfellow, Luz Robles, Karen Morgan, Utah State Representatives Lynn Heminway, Larry Wiley, Phil Reisen, Mark Wheatley, Jay Seegmiller, Christine Watkins, Trisha Beck, Janice Fisher, Carol Spackman Moss, Neil Hansen, Brian King, Young Democrats of Utah, and the Utah Stonewall Democrats Executive Board. ^[18]

Stout received endorsements from Bruce Bastion, Young Democrats of Utah, Bloggers JM Bell, Misty Fowler, Jason Wessel, and Bob Aagard. ^[19]

Democratic Nomination[edit]

The Utah State Democratic Party held its convention on May 8, 2010 at the Salt Palace Convention Center. Sam Granato won the nomination by obtaining more than 60% of votes from the delegates present.

Republican Nomination[edit]

The Utah State Republican Party also held its convention on May 8, 2010 at the Salt Palace Convention Center. The top three candidates in the first round of voting moved on to the second round. The top two candidates in the second round moved on to the third round of voting. Neither Tim Bridgewater or Mike Lee recieved 60% of the vote and advance to the State Republican Primary.
