Grocery Gateway is a grocery delivery service based in Ontario and serves the entire Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Grocery Gateway was the brainchild of Toronto entrepreneur Bill Di Nardo, who along with co-founders Scott Bryan, Stephen Tallevi, Tomas Berinstein, Ben Jones, and Alan Lamb, started the company in late 1997. In 1998, the company went online. [1]

History[edit]

As one of the few e-grocers left in Canada, Grocery Gateway was unsuccessful at making profits independently for 6 years. On August 25, 2004, the company was sold for 6.96 million dollars to Longo Brothers Fruit Market Incorporated, a family-owned independent business that was founded in 1956.[2] Within the first 8 months after it was sold, Grocery Gateway started to achieve double-digit sales and profitability and over the next several years the company would raise over $100 million in financing and at its peak employed over 600 people. Stephen Tallevi is the only one of five original co-founders of Grocery Gateway that is still currently involved in the business.[3]

Overview[edit]

Customers access products from the site grocerygateway.com, where they can purchase brand name canned goods, household supplies, fresh produce, meats, dairy goods and frozen products. The purchase must be a minimum order of $45 (excluding taxes) with an additional fee of $11.95 for delivery. Upon selecting their grocery items, customers can select a delivery date and time, and select their method of payment online either by VISA, MasterCard, Amex or pay by Interact (debit) at the door when the groceries are delivered. Once the order is submitted, the customer receives a confirmation email that is automatically sent and a call is made 15 minutes before delivery to alert them that their groceries are on the way. The order can be modified or rescheduled up until a day before delivery. Grocery Gateway has a freshness guarantee, meaning that their products are guaranteed to be fresh a certain amount of days before expiry depending on the type of product. In addition, on average the delivery window is approximately 90 minutes. [4]

Partners[edit]

On October 29, 2012, Grocery Gateway announced a partnership with Unata, a leading Digital Shopper Marketing Company. This partnership allows customers to access the Grocery Gateway site and order their groceries on their mobile devices either through the Grocery Gateway iPhone app or mobile web app. The app is personalized, allowing shoppers to create orders, view previously purchased groceries, select a delivery time and location, and check out their orders using any valid credit card.[5]

Grocery Gateway has also partnered up with Better Living Health and Community Services, a company who provides services and assistance to seniors and disabled adults who live independently. This private and non-profit program sets each client up with a personal Grocery Gateway account and an in-home visit from a Case Manager who will create a unique evaluation of their nutritional habits and preferences to create an initial grocery order. Grocery Gateway allows seniors to receive groceries at a discounted rate as well. If any help is required, Grocery Gateway also provides a volunteer assistance program where a trained volunteer can assist the client in unpacking groceries, making healthy choices, creating a grocery list, or teaching them how to place an order online or over the phone.[6]
