Marcin Maciej Borelowski, ps. „Lelewel” (born on 29th of October 1829 na Półwsiu Zwierzynieckim (part of greater Zwierzyniec), died on 6th or 7th of September 1863 in Sowiej Górze k. Batorza) – polish craftsman, social and patriotic activist, colnel in the January Uprising, war commissioner of the Podlaskie Voivodeship in May and June of 1863[1].
Curriculum Vitae[edit]
Our character came from family of craftsmen, he was a son of Charles (bricklayer) and Agnes of Noworyt house[2]. He was learning the tinsmitch trade in Cracow. His occupations were; tinsmith, well master as well as a participant of independence speeches in Cracow during years of 1846 and 1848, member of conspiracy movements against the Russian Empire. Programmatically associated with milleners party, but in 1862 Martin joined the party red (historical party of radicals striving for an open fight against the occupant to not be associated with modern red parties). During his time as conspiracy member he organized national police force and gathering of weaponry. Since 1859 he lived in Warsaw, where he was a co-organizer of patriotic demonstrations of the population, preceding the outbreak of the January Uprising. Moreover, as part of the pre-uprising action, he was an organizer of youth and rural people. During the uprising, he was the commander of partisan units and war chief of the Lubelskie and Podlaskie voivodeships.He attained the rank of colonel. On March 24, 1863, he was beaten in the Battle of Krasnobród. On the 16th of April he fought in battle of Borowe Młyny[3]. As he was approached by Russian troops in 1st battle of Chruślina he repulsed the enemy and attained victory. In battle of Panasówka on 3rd September he once again won over his foes. He died during battle of Sowia Góra (which was then won by the Russian forces) near Batorz 6th or 7th of September 1863.
Those of soliders that had fallen during uprising have been awarded by the president of RP (republic of Poland) Ignacy Mościcki on the 21st January 1933 with The Cross of Independence with Swords[4].
Commemoration[edit]
On the 50th anniversary of the death of Marcin Borelowski on September 7, 1913, celebrations were organized in Rzeszów, during which a commemorative section was unveiled in the "Sokół" building[5].
The following streets were named after Marcin Borelowski: in Lublin in the Konstantynów estate, in Kraków in Półwsie Zwierzynieckie, in Przemyśl in Zasanie - at Primary School No. 14. United Europe in Przemyśl, in Wrocław in the Sępolno district, in Częstochowa in Tysiąclecie, in Nysa, in Chrzanów, in Biłgoraj, in Janów Lubelski in the Zaolszynie estate, in Nowy Sącz, in Mińsk Mazowiecki.
