The English Alphabetic Code[edit]
The English Alphabetic Code shows the sound-spelling relationships between the spoken and written language. It is the foundation for teaching reading, writing and pronunciation through the phonics method.
A grapheme or digraph combined with a phoneme is called a letter sound. A key letter sound heads each column with the main alternative spellings listed below it. Some letter sounds can have more than one pronunciation and there are three letter sounds which are not pure phonemes. More spelling patterns can be found in the complex alphabetic code.
Irregular words cannot be decoded (see point 5 in the notes below the Alphabetic Code).
