Pink (Pinque) Coat
A "pink coat" (or "pinque coat") refers to red-colored coats worn by equestrians. The trend originated with foxhunters, who wore scarlet frocks to ensure the riders were not mistaken for prey and shot as they chased their quarry through the woods. Traditionally, only the hunt staff may wear Pinks, unless a rider has earned the right to do so and the Master of the Foxhunt gives permission. [1]
The origination of the term remains unclear, with the earliest references making connection to a tailor named Pink, Pinke or Pinque. [2] Other theories include referring to the faded color of a scarlet jacket after it had been worn for several seasons. [1]
Pink coats are also worn by riders who have competed internationally for the United States Equestrian Team . These coats are distinguished by blue collars with white piping and the USET crest on the lapel. Other countries' equestrian teams follow the tradition of USET and also issue pink coats to their international competitors, such as Australia, Germany, and Canada, among many others.
