Kevin A. Kling was born on November 2, 1960, the seventh child of Wallace David Kling and Shirley Ann Smith.

After graduating High School, he served a short stint in the US Navy during the cold war, trained as an Intermediate Level Ballistic Missile Technician in the Silent Service, graduating from the US Naval Submarine School in 1979. He has been published in trade magazines related to computerized maintenance management systems, and authored a book on the life of his wife's Great-Grandfather, Major General Edward Mann Lewis. In World War I General Lewis led the 3rd Brigade of the 2nd Infantry Division during the Somme Offensive, capturing the town of Vaux, near Chateau-Thierry. General John Pershing then promoted "Sep" Lewis to Major General, and put him in Command of the 30th Infantry Division, attached to the Fourth British Army under General Henry Rawlinson. The 30th Infantry Division (Old Hickory) smashed through the Hindenburg Line capturing the St. Quentin Canal and the important town of Bellicourt, hastening the end of the Great War.
