Professor Dr. Saiful Islam is a Bangladeshi academic. He is the current and the 13th Vice-chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).[1]

Education[edit]

  • Received BSc Engg (Electrical) degree from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET) Dhaka in 1975, obtained First Class with Honours marks and stood First in order of merit.
  • Received MSc Engg (Electrical) degree from BUET, Dhaka in 1977.
  • Received PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Cambridge University (Gonville & Caius College), Cambridge (UK) in 1986.

Career[edit]

Prof. Islam started his teaching career as a Lecturer of the Department of Electrical Engineering of BUET in May 1975. He became a Professor in 1988. He served as the dean of the Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering during 1995–1997.[2] On 22 June 2016, Islam was selected as the 13th Vice-chancellor of BUET. The post was vacant since Khaleda Ekram had died on 24 May 2016.[3]

From August 2013 until June 2016, Islam worked as the Pro-vice-chancellor of Primeasia University, a private university in Dhaka, after he was appointed by the President of Bangladesh.[2]

Awards[edit]

  • Received the "Junior Group Academy Award 1988 Gold Medal" of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS) for contribution in the field of Microwave Engineering in 1988. This award was jointly given by the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences Dhaka, Third World Academy of Science (Italy) and British Council.
  • Received "The Matsumae International Foundation Research Fellowship" of Japan in 1991.
  • Received a three-year Cambridge Commonwealth Trust Scholarship. In 1984, also received Overseas Research Students Award (ORS) of UK for 2 years in 1983.

In addition to regular teaching, research and administrative jobs, has been involved as a Technical Expert / Consultant. in a number of National Engineering Projects/ jobs related to

(i) Special Lighting (stadium lighting),

(ii) Electrical Distributions in high rise and usual Buildings and Cities,

(iii) Electrical Distributions in Industries,

(iv) Telecommunications and Wireless Communications

Worked as a member of the Board of Governors of Bangladesh Institute of Technology Khulna during 2000 - 2003. Worked as a member of the Syndicate of Khulna University of Engineering & Technology, Khulna since the beginning of this University in 2003 up to June 2007.

Worked as a member of the Selection Board for the appointment of Professors and Assistant Professor of ECE department of Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET), Khulna since the beginning of this University in 2003 up to August 2007.

Have been putting significant contribution in University level Engineering Education especially Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering (ETE) and Electronic and Communications Engineering (ECE).
