DLMagazine is a British online publication which features news and videos from the UK and international urban music scene.

History

DLMagazine was originally founded in 2009 as Download Magazine but was eventually shortened to DLMagazine as its popularity rose.

The site was created by a group of young freelance journalists in November 2009 after they became fed up with waiting for work opportunities to arise especially in the economic climate at the time it was founded, and to this day the magazine prides itself on still open to contributions from freelance journalist and young readers.[1]

Specialising in Grime, Hip-Hop R&B and Pop, DLMag has quickly become one of the leading online music publications in the UK and after its major rebranding and relaunch in 2010 it was nominated and won an Urban Media Award for best new publication. The success of DLMagazine is heavily due to its core fan base of teenagers who check the site daily allowing the site to continue, despite having little or no financial backing.

DLMagazine has recently partnered with the British Literacy Foundation to encourage youngsters to begin to read and write more in their free time. The partnership hopes to encourage youngsters to write in the magazine be rewarded for doing so.

Controversy

DLMagazine has had its fair share on controversy despite its relatively young age. Head Editor, Kojo Anyemedu was heavily criticised after publishing pictures of Chris Brown’s attack on Rihanna after fresh photos of the incident leaked online. Anyemedu insisted he only publishes what people want to see regardless of the controversial nature of the images or articles. Others complained the images were too gory considering the age group targeted by the magazine.
