FC Mere is a Belgian association football club based in Mere, East Flanders. The club has matricule number 4057 and the club's colours are black and red. They currently play in East Flanders Division Four, in the Belgian Provincial leagues. They play their home games at the Complex Sint-Bavoweg in Mere.[1]

History[edit]

The club was founded on 31 March 1944 and joined the Royal Belgian Football Association, with matricule number 4057 being assigned to the team. Mere played in the provincial leagues.

FC Mere absorbed the nearby FC Edixvelde (founded in 1967 and assigned with matricule number 7017 by the Royal Belgian Football Association; located in the Ediksveldestraat 52, in the residential area of Edixvelde) in 1999.[2]

FC Mere played for some years in Second Provincial, but was relegated in 2008/09 to Third Provincial. FC Mere absorbed KVC Erpe Erondegem in 2009.[3] This club based in Erpe, also called KVC Erperondegem, was assigned by the Royal Belgian Football Association the matricule number 4141 and had orange, green and black as colours. The club played in the lowest provincial series and had only one board member left, making it untenable, resulting in the decision to merge into FC Mere. Erperondegem was already a fusion between the clubs KFC Olympia Erondegem and FC Oranja Erpe. In 2010/11, FC Mere was relegated again and has played in the Fourth Provincial since 2011/12.

The football grounds of Erperondegem (Gentsesteenweg Erpe) and Edixvelde are still used for training and for the youth teams of FC Mere; the first team plays at Sint-Bavoweg in Mere. The football grounds of KFC Olympia Erondegem at the Gentsesteenweg in Erondegem are no longer in use.

Merger plans[edit]

There are ongoing plans for the four remaining clubs from Erpe-Mere (SK Aaigem, KRC Bambrugge, KFC Olympic Burst and FC Mere) to merge.[3] A new stadium will be built on the domain of Steenberg, with an objective of it being ready by 2015.[4] However, the merger is not expected to happen before 2016 at the earliest due to the need for a multi-purpose hall to be built first in Steenberg (source: municipality Erpe-Mere). The new football club will use the matricule number of KRC Bambrugge, that plays in the first provincial league, as the other teams play in lower series. It is thought to be almost certain that there will be black in the new club's colours, because of the four clubs that are still active, and the three clubs who merged into FC Mere, all had black in their club's colours. The K of Koninklijke (Royal) and Erpe-Mere will appear in the new club's name. More information about the name is currently unavailable.[5]
