Hejira are a band from London, formed in 2009 by core members Sam Beste, Rahel Debebe-Dessalegne and Alex Reeve. Their critically acclaimed debut album Prayer Before Birth[1], released on Accidental Records on 21st October 2013, was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2014 Worldwide Awards[2].

Story[edit]

Prayer Before Birth[edit]

In October 2010, Hejira relocated to Brockley, south-east London, setting up a studio 'The House of Dreams'[3] where Hejira would write, rehearse, record and film.[4] It was through this hive of activity that Hejira attracted the ears of Matthew Herbert who soon became involved in the production of their recordings.[5] In early 2012 Hejira intensified their recording schedule, spending two solid months in the house before transferring to Herbert's Human Jerky studio in Kent to put the finishing touches to the record. Released on Accidental Records in October 2013[6], their debut Prayer Before Birth received high critical acclaim and was launched with a filmed live performance at the Clapton Round Chapel[7] featuring a 17-piece ensemble fitted with a choir and trombone section, rounding off a series of specially commissioned films.[8]

Traum[edit]

Since January 2012 Hejira have curated 'Traum', a monthly music, art and social event.[9] Traum audiences have witnessed performances from pop vocalists such as Kwabs and Rosie Lowe, bands such as Micachu & The Shapes[10] and The Invisible[11], through to modern classical performances from the likes of Oliver Coates. At each Traum event Hejira release new music, available exclusively to Traum attendees via download codes. This begun as a series known as 'The Dust of Dreams' which Hejira released in volumes at successive Traum events.[12] In October 2013 Hejira organised a TRAUMTOUR, which exported Traum events around the UK to cities such as Manchester, Nottingham, Brighton and Cardiff.[13] [14] As part of the TRAUMTOUR Hejira released the TRAUMTAPE, which featured collaborations between the band and artists performing on the tour such as The Invisible,[15] Tawiah and Hello Skinny.[16] In July 2015 Hejira launched a new download series called 'Rituals', the first of which was released to the Traum audience at Birthdays in Dalston on 15th July 2015.[17]
