Significant Editing Disclosures[edit]

  • I am interested in editing articles relate to the civil engineering profession. Most of this editing will take place within the context of an Engineering Economics class of which I am a part for the Spring 2019 semester.

Wikipedia Exercise 4[edit]

Question 1

Wikipedia a century ago, needless to say, would have looked vastly different. Many of the sources used to provide information on the website today were written in the last century. Thus, much of the current information would not stand. In addition, many topics would not be present simply because they would not have happened in history yet. Events like President Kennedy's assassination or the Second World War would not be on Wikipedia. Many of the topics also would not have the extensive coverage they enjoy now as a century ago; several aspects of knowledge were not as well understood as they are today. As it relates to sources and contributors, many of the contributors would have to be persons at universities and other learning institutions as information was not as accessible as it is today. Much of the world's knowledge back then was contained in institutes of learning. Thus, if one wanted to learn and research a topic to put on Wikipedia, they would have to go out of their way to do so. It could not be done in the comfort of one's home, or office as it is now. Thus, many of the contributors to Wikipedia back then would likely be professors, college students, professionals and other persons who had easy access to the information.

A century from today would look a lot like what it does today but with MUCH more contributors because as time progresses, information becomes more accessible to the common man. If in today's society we have so much at our fingertips, how much more will the contributors a century from now have. The content would also be a lot more extensive as humans would have learned a lot about existing topics as well as new topics that will emerge in the coming century

Question 2

The same can be said about civil engineering content. Especially since civil engineering was still in its nascent stages at the time. Chances are only the practising civil engineers would be able to become worthwhile contributors to the Wikipedia pages since they were the only experts on the subject area. It would be difficult to challenge the information presented as there were only a handful of persons with expertise in civil engineering. As for the future, civil engineering would have evolved and become more advanced and developed. Again, the information would be available to any and every one. The knowledge bank for the profession would have grown significantly.

Engineering economics (civil engineering) Draft[edit]

Among several other concepts time value of money is a crucial concept in engineering economics. This has to do with interest paid on money over time. An old adage says “a bird in hand is more than two in the bush”. The concept is the same with money. A dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow. Engineering economics evaluates this using time-value of money (TVM).
