Storylines[edit]

Reception[edit]

Kate Atkinson has been described in her role as Vera as "achieving an uncannily familiar portrait of a still-innocent Vera Bennett."[1]

When writing about the first episode, Elaine Atwell of AfterEllen described Vera as "soon to be your favorite guard on earth"[2]

Ian Hollingshead of The Telegraph said about Vera "Unusually for a prison drama, the wardens were more than psychopathic ciphers. Miss Bennett (Kate Atkinson), the deputy governor, even tried to make friends with the prisoners."[3]
