Introduction[edit]

Smart collaborative networking (SCN) was first proposed in the academic community as a generalized notion for smart future Internet architecture[1][2]. The idea of SCN is to make heterogeneous networks naturally smart collabortions to satisfy various demands (i.e., Cloud computing, high mobility, and energy savings).

This thought can be driven by upgrading the software rather than the cost-consuming hardware. Currently, some emerging technologies provide great support for this software-oriented conversion, such as software defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization(NFV). However, neither SDN nor NFV is a pure networking architecture technology, as the network is assumed to be there before SDN or NFV can even be used. Therefore, a complete network architecture is required foremost to achieve high agility, flexibility, and scalability. In SCN architecture, different network functions can be organized, adjusted and transferred adaptively[3][4].

SCN makes the essential shift from the current service provisioning by means of controlled ownership of infrastructures to the future unified management framework full of flexible control and collaboration among users, networks, and services.

A keynote speech about SCN was invited in the IEEE INFOCOM 2016 Workshop MobiWorld [5][6].
