Composition, music and lyrics[edit]

"On Top of the World" is created from a combination of guitar and piano, accompanied by vocals by lead singer of the band, Dan Reynolds. Originally published in the key of C Major, the song itself expresses a celebration of accomplishment after the band Imagine Dragons thriving for years to become successful, according to "Explode" from http://www.absolutepunk.net/ [1]. The song itself incorporates the chords C, F, Dm, and G, with the pre-chorus using G and Am to create a different break in the song [2]. The styles of the song can be classified under Alternative Rock, Pop Rock, and Post-Punk Revival[3] with a wide range of beats and sounds contributing to the song. The song "On Top of the World" is found to be a positive, upbeat track by Imagine Dragons, among others found on their 2012 album Night Visions (album), including It's Time (Imagine Dragons song) and Radioactive (Imagine Dragons song). Their electronically based sound, supported by a moderately quick beat and a mix of piano, guitar and drums. This song, among others, creates a positive feel for their audiences. The title of the track alone, with lyrics incorporated such as, "I coulda gave up then but, then again, I couldn't have 'cause I've traveled all this way for something" [4], highlights the band's mentality to strive for positive messages through their sound.

Music Video[edit]

As a part of the "Imagine Dragons: The Making of Night Visions", a documentary about the creation of the band's debut album that was released on November 7, 2012 on VH1's Palladia, the band filmed a video of themselves performing "On Top of the World" and posted it on Youtube on September 5, 2012. The video features Imagine Dragons band members the song, with clips from a live performance with an audience.
