The Georgetown Hospital is a community hospital located in the Georgetown area of Halton Hills, Ontario. It is part of the Halton Healthcare Services group of hospitals.

Built on 17 acres (69,000 m2) of land, it opened in 1961 to serve Halton Region, but today it serves the communities of Peel Region also.[1]

History[edit]

In 1953, Dr. Alistair MacIntosh challenged his friend Jack at a dinner party to build a hospital in Georgetown, Ontario. In January, 1957 the first Board of Directors were established. The Board approved a name for the establishment before buidling commenced. The hospital was built on 17 acres of property - purchased for 500 dollars an acre, an unheard of amount in todays market. Just prior to the 1960, the Auxiliary was founded and funds began to be raised through traditional means such as raffle tickets, flower sales and fashion shows; means that are still used today by the Georgetown Hospital Foundation.

The ground breaking ceremony took place on June 12th, 1960, and almost a year to the day in 1961 hundreds gathered for the ribbon cutting unveiling of the new hospital. On June 27th, 1961 Georgetown Hospital opened its doors to accept patients, hosting 64 beds in total. The first patient to arrive in the Emergency Department was a 12 year old boy.

In 1963, The Candy Striper program was founded by Volunteer Blanche Goudeketting and the following year, the members of the Board of Directors and community created and managed the formal fundraising department, The Hospital Foundation an Endowment Trust Fund. This later grew to be more formally known as The Georgetown and District Memorial Hospital Foundation, and the fundraising that was accomplished through this endeavour was responsible for purchasing the land of the hospitals first large expansion, doubling the size of the original plot- adding 18 acres of land south of Princess Ann Drive.

The first Obstetrician arrived in 1976 - Dr. Raj Mander.

The Bennett Centre opened in 1999 in honour of a $1.3 million dollar inheritance left behind in 1985 from couple Stewart and Violet Bennett - passing away weeks apart back in 1982.

The 90's saw much growth for community fundraising and volunteer initiatives and services. In 1990, Cancer Care Ontario [1] brought adequate screening for breast cancer at no cost to patients over the age of 50, part of our provincial health care benefits. [2] '91 brought the the first annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, while the Auxiliary was renamed to the Hospital Volunteer Association. in 1998, as a result of the provincial Heath Services Restructuring Commission, Georgetown Hospital amalgamated with Etobicoke General and Brampton Memorial Hospitals as part of the William Osler Heath Network. In May 2005 however, The Minister of Health announced a transfer from William Osler Network to Halton Healthcare Services and joined that Health Network in January 2006. [3]

The Bennett Centre[edit]

The Bennett Centre is a Long Term Care facility home to 66 patients. Residents are treated to a home like experience with plants, pets, and many recreational activities. Originally opened as a wing of the Georgetown Hospital used for Chronic Care, then as a retirement home, the centre is now independently run however it's direct access to the emergency is an appealing feature to many of it's patients.

The Bennett Centre was founded off of a $1.3 million dollar donation left in honour of husband and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Bennett, residence of Ballinafad. The Centre opened it's doors in 1999, and is governed by a board of directors and rents it's space from the hospital. [4]
