Nkululeko "Legend" Manqele is a South African entrepreneur, television producer, and founder of The BarLeader TV Productions. He is known for his contributions to the television and film industry, as well as his commitment to promoting African storytelling and creating quality content.

Early Life and Career[edit]

Born in Pietermaritzburg, Legend Manqele was raised in a community that fostered a strong sense of storytelling and cultural connection. Inspired by the power of visual narratives, he embarked on a journey to celebrate his community, culture, and country through storytelling. Despite not having formal training or connections in the industry, he pursued his dreams and began his career as an intern at eNews, followed by a job at Urban Brew Studios.

Rise in the Industry[edit]

At Urban Brew Studios, one of South Africa's leading entertainment content providers, Manqele honed his skills and recognized the need for original and groundbreaking African content. In 2013, he joined Don't Look Down Productions, a multi-platform production company and talent agency, where he worked on various award shows and music specials. Later, in 2014, he founded his own production company, The BarLeader TV, with a focus on creating high-quality film and TV content that celebrates African stories with pride and dignity.

Manqele is deeply passionate about facilitating industry change and inclusivity. With BarLeader, he aims to challenge the monopolization of the South African film and TV industry and provide opportunities to marginalized groups. His company embraces authentic storytelling and strives to expand and shape the African media landscape.

Awards and Recognition[edit]

Legend Manqele's contributions to the television industry have been widely recognized and celebrated. His shows have received numerous nominations and have won several awards. He has been acknowledged as one of the most influential men in South Africa by GQ magazine and has been celebrated by Screen Africa for his work. He has also won two SAFTAS for his production Life With Kelly Khumalo and Living The Dream with Somizi, a category created specifically for this genre of TV show (Reality Show) which he is credited for its existence since the commercial success Amo Stef audiences due to his approach and execution of the genre. He was also recognised by the city of Durban and given the key to the city as a recognition of good work.

Expansion and Philanthropic Efforts[edit]

Over the years, Manqele has expanded The BarLeader brand to include The BarGroup, which encompasses BarLeader TV, BarLab Agency (a digital firm), and the acquisition of lifestyle and business magazines Destiny and Destiny Man. Additionally, he opened a wine boutique store called Ballihoo in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Alongside his entrepreneurial pursuits, he remains committed to creating employment opportunities, promoting the role of women in the industry, and driving investment in South Africa.
