Olufuko Festival[edit]

Advantages[edit]

Olufuko festival is mainly practice my Oshiwambo speaking people, who reside in the Northern part of Namibia. Festivals in Namibia is not a new thing, although the exciting thing behind these type of festival is that, people come together to embrace and celebrate “rural styles” . The focus is on cultural dances, traditional food and drinks such as Omalovu giilya and Omangongo, the process of initiation for both male virgins and female virgins through Olufuko which is known as traditional marriages according to Olufuko festival which was held in Outapi Town. Olufuko Festival mentors young people to live positive way, as they are expected to follow in their parents and anscestors ways of living so that their culture and tradition is passed on to the next generation in a harmonious way.

Disadvantages[edit]

When it comes to females, Olufuko is done with a purpose in mind to turn young girls into women who are virgins and ready to be brides for a decent man or men, although not everyone agrees with it. Based on the New Era newspaper (August, 2012), this type of ceremony comes a long way and many civilized and modern living people are against it. The reasons why people do not agree with it - is because it steps on the dignity and integrity of females in general.
