The Polytechnic University of the Philippines offers over 100 academic programs at its three campuses in Santa Mesa, Manila, Philippines. PUP is well known for its business, accountancy, and communication programs and pioneered the open education concept in the Philippines.

PUP has 14 colleges, a secondary school department, a graduate school, and a distance education unit. The schools, colleges, and institute are degree-granting academic units. The PUP College of Education and PUP Graduate School offer the masteral and doctoral programs of the university while the PUP Open University offers diploma, bachelor, and master's degree programs. The rest of the colleges of university offer only undergraduate programs.

Organization[edit]

Academic units founded during the Philippine College of Commerce-era used the term "faculty". Among the faculties established were Faculty of Arts and Sciences (now College of Arts and Letters and College of Science), Faculty of Engineering (now College of Engineering and College of Architecture and Fine Arts), and Faculty of Secretarial and Business Education (now College of Education). After the martial law, faculties were elevated to college status and new units were called colleges.

Each of the independent units is headed by a dean, a principal, or a director.

Demographics[edit]

PUP has the largest student population in the Philippines. There are total 68,249 students in 2013, with 59,572 undergraduates and 1,681 graduate and professional students. [1] [2] More than a hundred of the student population are foreigners from China, Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia, Myanmar, Tanzania, Nigeria, and Ghana. [3]

PUP has 2,747 employees as of the year-end 2013.[1] For the academic year of 2012-2013, PUP has 1,828 faculty.[4] Its faculty-student ratio is 1:37.[5]

Research[edit]

The Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension, Planning and Development is the official research and planning agency of the PUP. It was established as the Department of Research and Statistics in November 1951.[6] PUP is a member of the De La Salle UniversityCommission on Higher Education Zonal Research Center.[7] PUP hosted the 2013 International Research Conference in Higher Education.[8]

Funding[edit]

In 2014, PUP released ₱1.7 million to finance 11 researches. 3 of the approved research proposals came from the College of Science, 3 from the College of Education, 2 from the College of Communication, 1 each for the College of Arts and Letters and the South Cluster I of PUP Taguig. The research grant was given in 3 tranches.[9] In 2015, the Approved Institutional Research amounts to ₱2,280,947.00.[10]

The Ninoy Aquino Library and Learning Resources Center is regarded as one of the largest libraries in Southeast Asia.

Library[edit]

The Ninoy Aquino Library and Learning Resources Center (NALLRC) is the library system of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines composed of libraries providing services to the PUP System. Its headquarters is in the building of the same name, located in Manila, Philippines. NALLRC offers various services and development of programs to its clientele.

The library offers various services like the Reader Services Department, a part of the library services that directly brings out research and information to library users. Sections under the department includes Reference, Serials, Filipiniana/Special Collections, and Circulation. There are also other services offered by the library like the Multimedia Services (auditorium and hall), Special Services (archives and museum), Free Wi-Fi access at the Archives Section, DOST-STARBOOKS, Library Instruction/Orientation, Readers Assistance, and Referral.
