About
The Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy is an academic center located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, "focused on increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of the charitable sector." The Johnson Center conducts research, teaches effective practices, and supports service. The Johnson Center primarily serves West Michigan, but also extends to the state of Michigan as well as nationally and internationally.
The Center on Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership (original name) began in 1992 as a multidisciplinary, university-wide center developed with the support of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and Grand Valley State University. In 1999, the Center was renamed in honor of Dorothy A. Johnson, a national leader in philanthropy and a 25-year president of the Council of Michigan Foundations.
The Johnson Center is dedicated to "enhancing the impact of foundations nationally and nonprofit organizations regionally, improving the quality of community decision-making with community members in West Michigan, and encouraging a habit of civic engagement among students, staff, and faculty at GVSU."
This center is part of the College of Community and Public Service at Grand Valley State University and maintains a strong connection with the School of Public, Nonprofit and Health Administration.
