Stampede City Sessions is a Canadian produced television music program recorded live at Webber Academy Performing Arts Centre In Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Creators Lorne and Candace Webber based their series off of the American television program Austin City Limits. Having grown up with the 70s music showcase, the Webbers hope to achieve the same notability with their own music broadcast. The primary focus for the broadcast is to allow smaller, lesser known performers to attain more exposure.[1] Stampede City Sessions have included artists such as Rosanne Cash, Lisa Hannigan, Mark Chesnutt, and Theo Fleury.[1] Created in 2012, the show was initially broadcast on ShawTV. In the year 2017, Stampede City Sessions switched to PBS affiliate KSPS Public Television. This was due to Shaw TV “shut[ing] down its TV stations in Calgary, Vancouver and Edmonton”.[1] This change allowed Stampede City Sessions to increase potential viewership by about 2 million households, expanding to areas such as Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana.[1] Stampede City Session airs Saturday nights at 10 p.m. (GMT-6) on KSPS public television.

Availability[edit]

Format[edit]

Each session runs for approximately 60 minutes, typically consisting of an artist or two showcasing their live music skills. Beginning in 2012, the ‘home for great live music’ is now in its fifth season. With a potential reach of 3.3 million, cameras work to achieve close-ups and long shots to give audiences the full experience.

Venue[edit]

Stampede City Sessions are performed and recorded at the Webber Academy Performing Arts Centre Theatre in Calgary. The theatre first opened in 2012 and is a 500 seat proscenium style theatre.[4] The stage is 14m wide x 12m deep with a 3m wing space on either side for performance purposes.[4] Backstage features dressing rooms, a green room and a stage level loading dock, while the lobby has a bar, a patio, a merchandise area and ticket centre.[4] The venue hosts multiple performers each year for the filming of the Stampede City Sessions.[5]
