Founder[edit]

Francois Nars was born in the South of France. Raised under the influence of his mother, Claudette Nars, he was exposed to fashion from an early age. It was thanks to her that he acquired his first job as an assistant to some of Paris’s top makeup artist. After graduating form Carita Makeup school in Paris, in 1984 Nars moved to New York1. It was there where his obsession with colour and modern style got him recognized as an artist. He also became part of a trio with photographer Steven Meisel and hair stylist Oribe Canales. In the eighties and nineties they produced many magazine editorials appearing in American Vogue, Vogue Italia and Elle2. Nars very quickly became popular amongst fashion designers like Marc Jacobs for his ability to create looks that engaged with the story and feel of their designs3. Celebrities also sought out for him like Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista4. His philosophy towards makeup also put him on the rise: to use makeup to explore the depths and nuances of individual character5. Through his work Francois Nars became frustrated on how little product there was for makeup artists. In 1994 Francois Nars released his own makeup NARS. After shooting his first advertising campaign himself, Nars found a new creative medium. 6This lead him to shooting several editorials for major magazines as well as all the Nars’ ad campaigns today. Currently Nars has published four books of his photography.7
Today Nars remains as the artistic director, in-house photographer, and copywriter for his brand8.
