Rex Martin[edit]

In 1989 I married Margreth Trümpi, of Ennenda, Switzerland.

My primary teachers were Edward Livingston and Arnold Jacobs. I also took lessons with Edward Kleinhammer.

In 1998 I received the "Young Alumni Award" from Illinois State University.

In 1998 I began a twice yearly series of master classes in Castagneto Carducci, Italy. In these classes I have worked with some of the finest professional brass players in Italy.

In 1995, I was the host of the 1995 International Tuba Euphonium Conference, at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL.

Since 1999 I have been a full professor at Northwestern University, having been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 1994, Assistant Professor in 1989, and Instructor in 1988.

Previously, I was a professor at the Oberlin Conservatory (1994-1996), DePaul University (1983-1989), University of Illinois at Chicago (1989-1995), University of Notre Dame (1987-1991), Illinois State University (1983-1984).

As a conductor and clinician, I have worked with the brass sections of symphony orchestras in Mexico City, Osaka, Malmö, (Sweden), Stavanger, (Norway), Rome, and Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, Sonderborg, and Alborg Denmark.

I have presented recitals and master classes at the prestigious Blekinge International Brass Academy in Karlskrona, Sweden five times.

I have presented master classes and recitals at the Spanish Brass Festival in Valencia, Spain.


I am on the faculty of Ticino Musica in Lugano, Switzerland.

I have presented recitals and master classes in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, France, Holland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Australia, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Costa Rica, Mexico, and throughout the United States.

I recorded many CDs with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Sir Georg Solti, Claudio Abbado, Leonard Bernstein, Naeme Järvi, Michael Tilson Thomas, Leonard Slatkin, and Daniel Barenboim.

I have been a guest professor at universities throughout the United States, and in Stockholm (Royal Conservatory), Oslo (Norwegian State Academy of Music), Copenhagen (Royal Danish Academy of Music), Lyon (Lyon National Conservatory of Music), Berlin (University of the Arts), Lucerne (Lucerne Conservatory) Zurich (Zurich Conservatory of Music) Osaka (Osaka University of Fine Arts, Osaka Conservatory) Tokyo (Tokyo College of Music) Amsterdam (Conservatory of Amsterdam) Madrid (Royal Conservatory of Music).
