Michel Perrin, in religion Father Joseph-Marie Perrin (30 July 1905 – 13 April 2002) was a Dominican and French resistant named a Righteous Among the Nations in 1999. He is equally well known for having been the spiritual director of Simone Weil.

Biography[edit]

He was the second son of Edmond Perrin.[1], career soldier and Germaine Perrin de la Boullaye He was the godbrother of General Gaston Venot and uncle of professor Alain Venot. In 1916, he learned that he had Retinitis pigmentosa and was going to go blind. His elder brother and one of his sisters suffered from the same condition.[2] His mother encouraged her children to learn braille. He was put in contact with the Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles and encouraged to pursue studies.

He already had the desire to become a priest.[3] During a retreat, he confided this resolution to the almoner of the school, who told him to no longer consider it, as blindness was insurmountable impediment to priestly ordination.[4] Sometime thereafter, his mother wrote the future Cardinal Archbishop of Paris, Jean Verdier, who gave a discouraging response.[5] Michel was put in contact with Father Marie-Vincent Bernadot, OP and decided to become a Dominican. He entered the novitiate of Saint-Maximin in October 1922.{ Harvsp | Leca | 2015| loc=Chronologie | id=Leca2015}}</ref> He made his religious profession on 2 September 1927, continuing his studies and preparing for his ordination. As canon law at the time did not permit the ordination of the blind, he had to receive a dispensation from Pius XI. He was finally ordained a priest on Holy Saturday 1929.[6].

Assigné au couvent de Marseille[7], il est notamment chargé de l'assistance aux étudiantes. Très actif en tant que confesseur, il consacre également beaucoup de temps à la prédication et devient supérieur de son couvent. Convaincu de l'importance du rôle des laïcs dans l'Église, le 4[8] il fonde avec Juliette Molland l'Union missionnaire des petites sœurs de sainte Catherine de Sienne, qui deviendra plus tard l'Union Caritas Christi[9]. Caritas Christi est érigée en institut séculier de droit diocésain le 6, et en institut séculier de droit pontifical le 19. Le père Perrin fondera encore l'Association des prêtres de Caritas Christi (1961) et les Fraternités Caritas Christi (30)[8].
