R. Adam Engle[edit]

R. Adam Engle is the American social entrepreneur and innovator who initiated the Mind and Life Dialogues between the 14th Dalai Lama and various notable scientists in the 1980s.[1][2]

This initiative developed into the Mind and Life Institute which Engle registered in 1990 in the US as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organisation dedicated to exploring the interface between science and Buddhism.[1] The two other co-founders were Tenzin Gyatso the 14th Dalai Lama[citation needed] and Francisco Varela the late Chilean neuroscientist.[2][3]

Engle worked as CEO of the Institute for the next 22 years and guided its development into the worldwide and influential organisation which it had become when he stood down in 2013.[4]
