This document deals with the issues surrounding the nomenclature used in United Kingdom geography aricles (villages, towns, counties, local authorities etc), and is meant to be used as a reference tool during future discussions on this topic.

Background[edit]

Summary of findings[edit]

The case with Cornwall[edit]

Disagreement over nomenclature often crop up in relation to Cornwall because of its ambiguous constitutional status. The basis for these disagreements lies in the historical peculiarities surrounding Cornwall's place in the UK, the relationship between the Cornwall and the Duchy of Cornwall, cultural issues concerning the difference between Cornish and English, an identification with celtic rather than English culture and a wish that Cornwall be recognised as a fifth 'home nation'rather than a county. However, regardless of the legality, righly or wrongly, at present Cornwall is administered as a county of England by Cornwall County Council. Geographical articles should not be used as political platforms and there is plenty of scope elsewhere on Wikipedia to discuss the details of the interesting political position of Cornwall. If you would like to write about these aspects of Cornwall then there are several pages that would benifit from your expertise (here, here, here and here. These articles are generally well linked from geography pages to allow people to find out more if they require.

Straw poll[edit]

Discussion led to a straw poll. Options were:

  • 1. Tiered government (a name for each level of local and devolved government eg. Truro, Carrick, Cornwall, UK; or Edinburgh, City of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK; or Newry, Newry and Mourne, Northern Ireland, UK; or Charlton, Greenwich, London, UK; or Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, Wales, UK; ie., Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales would be mentioned, but not England, as England has no devolved government)
  • 2. One container (e.g Cornwall only, and let the reader follow the links and work out for themselves the geography if they need to)
  • 3. Home nation only (e.g Truro, Cornwall, England, or Pontypridd, Glamorgan, Wales, the argument being that it is more specific)
  • 4. Sovereign state (The Uk is the sovereign state therefore Uk only used for all places e.g. Pontypridd, UK, Cornwall, UK)
  • 5. Home nation and UK (Cornwall, England UK - has the most information about the place, but some feel is a little cumbersome)
  • 6. Other
