Thanks for your help on the Issue One page[edit]

Hi Maproom, I just wanted to say a quick thank you for your edits to the Issue One article earlier this week. I have a COI as I work for Issue One, but I've been hoping an experienced editor like yourself might take a look at the proposed edits I've posted on the Issue One Talk page. If you're able to continue making changes as you see fit, I would really appreciate it. I've proposed edits to the History and Organization sections. Thank you again! AR at Issue One (talk) 20:30, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi again @Maproom – I just wanted to flag that I replied to your comment on the Issue One Talk page. Reposting what I wrote here for your convenience:
Thank you for retitling the History section! I completely understand your concerns; we were just thinking that information about these two previous organizations' goals and funding were too detailed for a page about Issue One. But absolutely no problem at all if you don't feel those changes are necessary, and I really appreciate you taking the time to review them. If you have some time, we'd greatly appreciate you taking a look at the edits to the Organization section as well. So far, a couple of our suggested changes to the section have been made (adding an "Activities" section and putting some information about the ReFormers Caucus under a new heading, "Campaign Finance Reform"). There's now duplicate information under "Campaign Finance Reform" and "ReFormers Caucus", so the "ReFormers Caucus" section should be removed, and there are still several other suggestions that haven't been reviewed (mostly adding new subsections about Issue One's major activities and correcting some information about key personnel). Again, thank you for your work on the History section! And thank you in advance for any time you're able to spend on the Organization section. AR at Issue One (talk) 17:38, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
I see that the "Organization" section refers to "The Group", "Issue One", and "The organization". It's not clear to me whether these are three different things, three ways to refer to the same thing, or what. Two of them have different mission statements, so I guess they're not all the same thing.
The whole article gives the impression of having been written by someone inside the organization(s). It has the feel of an advertisement, which inclines me to disbelieve everything it says, and stop reading. Its/their claimed objectives are ones I admire, but after reading I'm left with a negative impression. How about including some criticism? If I read that Trump dislikes it/them, that would create a much better impression, in me anyway. Maproom (talk) 18:20, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
Hi @Maproom,
Thank you for the feedback! The different mission statements are a result of some of our proposed changes being implemented before the old sections have been properly removed — I would absolutely appreciate if you would delete the first line under organization – "The group's stated mission is 'reducing the influence of money in politics and putting everyday Americans back in control of our democracy.'" — That reflects our previous mission statement, which has since changed to the one recently added under the "Activities" section. The "group", "organization", and "Issue One" do all refer to Issue One.
We absolutely don't want this to read as an advertisement and would appreciate your input if there's any criticism that should be included. From my perspective, our proposed changes read like Wikipedia articles of many peer organizations. Our main objective in editing the Issue One page is to bring it up to date, as Issue One has changed significantly since most of this page was written. To be the most informative it can be, our page needs to be updated so it doesn't incompletely describe our work or mislead the public by omitting information about our key priorities and activities at this time. The reason we've proposed getting rid of certain things is because they overstate the importance of reports/news articles from a long time ago. Blueprints for Democracy is a cross-published report from eight years ago — Issue One has published dozens of reports since then. And the single line about the Trump administration is from one news article six years ago, while Issue One gets hundreds of mentions in the press per year. By all means, we are open to appropriate criticism on the Issue One Wikipedia page, and absolutely want the page to accurately reflect the organization's role and activities. We just hope to update the page so that it is accurate. Again, I'd appreciate any and all edits that you are comfortable making. Please let me know if this assuages your concerns, or if you have any further feedback. AR at Issue One (talk) 19:21, 5 April 2023 (UTC)

Question from Kassioopea (13:12, 9 March 2023)[edit]

Hi,

I would like to add to Wikipedia page for a great watercolor painter - Ron Ranson. He died in 2016. The information I would like to publish is sourced from blog posts and books. Is it ok to quote the basic information and link to the resources?

I love Ranson's work and was surprised that there is no mention regarding his work on Wikipedia. If possible I would like to contribute and bring his amazing work to the community.

Kasia --Kassioopea (talk) 13:12, 9 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi Kasia. I know nothing of painting, but that's not a problem. I do understand what's needed to get an article accepted by Wikipedia. (A few years ago, I helped to get the article Mir Abdolrez Daryabeigi accepted by Wikipedia. You can see the rather long discussion I had with the draft's creator here.)
Your problem will be to find some reliable independent published sources with extensive discussion of Ranson. Once you've done that, it'll be relatively easy to write the draft by summarising what they say (and omitting your own knowledge and opinions), citing them as you go. Blog posts will not be accepted, as they aren't reliable - the blogger can write whatever they like. Books are good, so long as they're published by a respected publisher. Major newspapers and magazines are good, an obituary in the New York Times would be a great source.
I've used Google to search for "Ron Ranson", and found plenty of information about him. But I was surprised not to find anything that I think Wikipedia would accept. There's plenty of blogs, which aren't acceptable. There's https://beartrailart.com/ed-whitney-archives, I can't judge whether that would count. There's advertisements for his paintings, and for copies of his books - those don't help. I wouldn't expect Google to find useful stuff from books, so I hope the books you mention qualify as reliable sources.
If you are able to get an article on Ranson accepted, you should go to Edward Wesson and convert the mention there of Ranson's name to a wikilink. Maproom (talk) 14:30, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
Hi Maproom,
Thank you for your comments. I have one book published by Collins (collins.co.uk) which should count as "reliable", Ronson is one of four artists presenting their techniques. In the very book "Learn to paint Watercolour with the experts", on the bio page for Ronson there is following info:
- he has published articles for "Leisure Painter Magazine"
- published articles for "Australian Artist Magazine"
- held for several years prestigious position of European editor of the "International Artist Magazine"
- run workshops at his home called "Wye Valley Watercolour Weekends"
- also run popular workshops worldwide - Norway, Holland, Italy, Greece, France, US, Australia, South Africa
I think digging deeper / emailing these magazines can bring confirmation and more details. What do you think? Kassioopea (talk) 15:12, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
-I see that Learn to paint Watercolour with the experts is co-authored by Ranson. That means that it is not independent of the subject and so does not help to establish that he's notable.
-It's not articles by him that we need, it's independent articles about him.
-Emailing magazines and getting replies won't help at all, as those replies won't have been published.
What someone will need to find is several sources each of which is reliable and independent and published and includes in-depth discussion of Ranson. Maproom (talk) 15:21, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
Ok, thank you, I'll see what I find. Kassioopea (talk) 15:48, 9 March 2023 (UTC)

Question from Nixonverse (14:40, 9 March 2023)[edit]

Salutations! Is it okay if I have a Wikipedia account, but not for editing articles? I'm worried I'll mess up an edit, or add incorrect information, or some other mistake. I also don't really know how to edit articles anyway. I just like to browse ^__^! Thank you for your time, and for everything you do for Wikipedia! ♡ --Nixonverse (talk) 14:40, 9 March 2023 (UTC)

Nixonverse, yes, you can have a Wikipedia account and not use it for editing, if you wish. Messing up an edit is no big deal, it's very easy for anyone to revert a messed up edit. What's annoying is editors who mess things up, accidentally or deliberately, and then argue about it or keep on doing it despite being told not to. Maproom (talk) 14:50, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
Duly noted! Nixonverse (talk) 16:16, 9 March 2023 (UTC)

Question from Centsis (01:43, 17 March 2023)[edit]

I see that 'tone' is one of the copyedit recommendations - how do you advise on that aspect? --Centsis (talk) 01:43, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

I don't know where that recommendation is made, so I can't properly comment. The main tone issue I'm aware of is articles that are written to praise rather than to inform. I guess a copy-editor can fix that, just as anyone else can; but I don't see it as a central to copy-editing. Maproom (talk) 08:08, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Draft:2TNX (Roblox Korean boy band)[edit]

A tag has been placed on Draft:2TNX (Roblox Korean boy band) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a recently created redirect from an implausible typo or misnomer, or other unlikely search term.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. - 🔥𝑰𝒍𝒍𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑭𝒍𝒂𝒎𝒆 (𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒌)🔥 21:27, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

Salut Matt. Question from Ted Dingle on Talk:The Rachel Maddow Show (13:46, 11 May 2023)[edit]

Listening recently, heard Rachel mention a study of near overthrow of Constitution and American gov’t prior to WWII. Did this include the envisioned kidnapping/‘neutralization’ of the FDR Administration by right-wing fascists/industrialists as exposed by a Quaker 3-star General (name escapes me at this moment) followed by a closed session investigation by Congress in early 30’s? Believe this little-discussed element of American history was queried by news (Eric Severeid?) in the 60’s with little public impact plus release of Congressional investigative notes through a FOIA request…Sincere thanks, Ted --Ted Dingle (talk) 13:46, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I know nothing whatever about Rachel Maddow, or the alleged plot, or the Quaker general. Maproom (talk) 13:52, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
... but a Wikipedia search suggests that the general was Smedley Butler.   Maproom (talk) 13:55, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
Still waiting for your response to my previous question regarding Congressional investigation following Gen. Smedley Butler in the early 1930’s? Ted Dingle (talk) 12:30, 14 May 2023 (UTC)
I also know nothing whatever about the Congressional investigation. Maybe you're looking for Smedley Butler#Business Plot?   Maproom (talk) 13:08, 14 May 2023 (UTC)

Question from KateGeraghty on Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions/Archive 1182[edit]

Hi Maproom

I wanted to follow up on our discussion regarding the bolttech AfC Draft:Bolttech that we started in Wikipedia:Teahouse. Aware I was initially slow to reply and therefore it quickly slipped into the 1182 archive Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions/Archive 1182. I really appreciated your earlier guidance and would like to see if you had any thoughts on my reply and how best we can work together on getting this article up to standard.

I’d be very grateful for any assistance, thank you.

KateGeraghty (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 10:45, 22 May 2023 (UTC)

I'm fairly busy for a while. But I've one comment about the draft. Ok, bolltech is an insurance company. It takes on risk. But risk of what? The draft doesn't give any clues. Maproom (talk) 16:05, 22 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi Maproom, thanks for your query. The core of bolttech’s business is a technology-driven insurance exchange connecting insurers with distributors and their customers to make it easier to buy and sell insurance. Other than traditional insurers, agents or brokers, distributors also include non-insurance businesses wanting to add insurance products relevant to their own customer journeys – like, extended warranties for e-commerce, or travel insurance for airlines. The business also provides services across brokerage, insurance/protection product manufacturing, servicing, and reinsurance.

I've used TechCrunch, Forbes and bolttech's website to evidence this information - linked here.

I hope this helps provide clarity to the draft AfC and I’d welcome your thoughts on how this can be better reflected before it is re-submitted for approval.

Why after such hardwork, my articles got rejected! --Muzammil Nawaz Khan (talk) 12:35, 29 May 2023 (UTC)

I guess this is about your contributions to Taunsa Sharif. They were removed because you provided no sources for what you wrote. For all we know, you may have made it all up. Wikipedia is based on information that can be found in reliable published sources. If you have sources for what you wrote, you can restore it, but with citations of your sources. Question from Nolan dickson on User:Nolan dickson/sandbox (17:38, 30 June 2023)[edit]

Hello which subjects do you take on high school when you want to become a Prosecutor --Nolan dickson (talk) 17:38, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

I really have no idea. My guess is that you won't be able to study law until you get to college; so while you're at high school you should study whatever subjects will give you the best grades, to help you get into college. Maproom (talk) 18:48, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
