The TRACEY model is a technique for coaching. It is named after Tracey Thomas-Marshall, a consultant working for Education Leeds and is especially useful in the field of education.

Stages of TRACEY[edit]

T Timed Targets It is important at the outset of any coaching session to set targets, stating clearly what you want to achieve. These targets should also be time-bound, with a clear idea of how long it will take to achieve them.
R Realistic Reasoning This next stage is when you think through how to achieve the targets. This should be in the form of a discussion between the coach and the coachee to develop a chain of reasoning which both makes the target achievable but is also realistic.
A Agreed Action After the reasoning or thinking stage, next comes the action that must be taken to achieve the targets. This should be agreed through a process of negotiation between the coach and the coachee.
C Creative Collaboration The coach and the coachee work together to think of creative ways to carry out the actions identified in the previous step.
E Effective Evaluation This is an evaluation of the creative ideas and the actions that they relate to. To be effective, the evaluation needs to be honest and focussed.
Y Your next steps... Based on the five previous steps, the coach and the coachee can now formulate and write down the next steps.
