Prof. Joseph Mattam (31st October 1930 – 05 November 2013) was an Indian novelist, short story writer, Journalist and Malayalam Professor. Prof. Joseph Mattam was a well-known Malayalam novelist and translator of literature who authored more than 100 books. He was best known for a genre of sentiment-filled spiritual fiction as novel in Malayalam literature and also for science writing for children.
Life[edit]
Joseph Mattam was born in 1930 in Cherpunkal, a small village near Palai in Kottayam district, Kerala. He graduated in 1954 from St. Thomas College Pala. He began his career as a Journalist in Deepika Newspaper, Kottayam and worked there as Sub editor for 12 years. He studied further at SB college Changanacherry and obtained MA in 1967. He then took up the job of Professor of Malayalam in St Thomas College, Pala till 1986 . He was the editor of 'Shastrapadam' a science journal for students, brought out by a Catholic inter diocesan trust from 1990s till his death in 2013.
Literary career[edit]
Joseph Mattam, wrote over 100 books, mainly novels. 'Family in Love' was his 103rd book. He had won the Kumkumam award for his novel 'Lokam Pisachu Shareeram' and the Appan Thampuran Puraskaram for the translation of Kazantzakis' magnum opus, 'God's Pauper'.
He was awarded the Kerala Sahitya Academy award for life time contribution to Malayalam literature in 2010.
