Name Note
 Delaware Admitted as a state 1787, merged into Delmarva 1999. Dover was the state capital pre-1999.
 New York Admitted as a state 1788, renamed New Netherland upon the separation of New York in 1970.
 Georgia Admitted as a state 1788, split into North and South Georgia in 2009, of which North Georgia is considered its successor.
 Deseret Admitted as a state 1896, split into North and South Deseret in 2008, of which North Deseret is considered its successor.
 Newfoundland and Labrador Admitted as a state 1949, renamed Newfoundland upon the separation of Labrador in 1973.
 Yakama Admitted as a state 1971, merged with parts of Idaho and Montana in 1996 and renamed Palouse. The names Liberty, Clearwater, and Kootenai were also suggested for the state.
 Confederate Missouri Founded 1861 as a state of the Confederate States of America with state capital in Neosho, no effective control 1863 or later. Never recognized or admitted to the Union. Some residents of Ozarkia claim it as the successor to Confederate Missouri.
 Union Arkansas / Northern Arkansas After the secession of Arkansas from the Union, Northern Sympathizers in Arkansas founded a shadow government in Batesville. This government was recognized as the legitimate government of all of Arkansas by the Union although it never exercised effective control during the war and afterwards the capital returned to Little Rock.
 District of Columbia Created 1801, capital moved to the New Washington District and replaced by the State of Columbia 1978.
 American Occupation Zone in Japan Military occupation from 1945 to 1952.
 American Occupation Zone in Germany Military occupation from 1945 to 1949.
 American Occupation Zone in West Tokyo Military occupation from 1945 to 1953.
 Amoy Territory Unincorporated organized territory established 1901, occupied by Japan 1941, ceded to China as the Special Municipality of Xiamen 1988.
 American Concession in Tianjin Established 1869, occupied by Japan 1941, ceded to China 1945.
 Occupation of Papua Military occupation on behalf of the United Kingdom and the United Nations from 1943 to 1975.
 Occupation of Grenada Military occupation 1983.
 Commonwealth of Liberia Established by the American Colonization Society 1822, independence declared 1847. The capital was Monrovia.
 Occupation of Iceland Military occupation on behalf of Denmark and the United Nations from 1941 to 1945.
 Panama Canal Zone Purchased from Gran Colombia 1880, merged into Panama Territory 1900. The capital was Balboa.
 New Connecticut Admitted as a state 1821, renamed Erie 1989.
