Natalia Grace is a Ukrainian-born American woman who was adopted in 2010 by an American couple, Kristin and Michael Barnett, in a closed adoption. The Florida-based adoption agency allegedly gave the Barnetts a Ukrainian-language birth certificate that stated her birth year as 2003, leading the couple to believe that Natalia was six years old.^[1] According to the Barnetts, they began to suspect within days that Natalia was considerably older.^[2]

In 2012 the couple successfully petitioned a Marion County, Indiana court to change Natalia's birth year from 2003 to 1989, legally revising her age as 21 or 22 at the time of her adoption by the Barnetts.^[2]^[3] Natalia was born with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, a rare medical condition that results in dwarfism.^[2]
