"Mazic/Poison song"
Song

"Poison" is a song by South Korean K-pop girl group Secret. The song was released as the lead single of their third mini-album of the same name on September 13, 2012. The song was written and produced by Kang Ji Won and Kim Ki Bum, the same producers of their previous hits such as "Magic", "Madonna" "Shy Boy", "Starlight Moonlight" and "Love is Move". "Poison" is a dance-pop song with influences from R&B, Jazz and Hip-Hop music which utilizes repeating saxophone segments. Lyrically, the song describes the protagonist's feelings of being unable to break away even while knowing that as one falls in love, it only ends up becoming poison to the individual.

The music video for the song was recorded on August 2012. On September 7, 2012, TS Entertainment released a 30 second video teaser of "Poison" which features the intro and the hook of the song. The music video revolves around Secret acting as thieves while seducing a male detective to steal jewelries and ended up killing him. The theme of the music video was based off the 1940s British ‘lady look’ and ‘espionage look’. The concept of the music video was influenced by the film Noir and portrays a femme fatale image.

Background and release[edit]

In August 2012, TS Entertainment announced that after nearly a year absence in the South Korean music scene, Secret will have a comeback in South Korea sometime in September.[1][2] The song is described as an "upbeat dance track" and was written and produced by Kang Ji Won and Kim Ki Bum whom they previously worked with their previous hit singles.[1][2] According to TS Entertainment, “Poison will have all the unique characteristics and colors of Secret but will have a change in concept from the cute and friendly image [shown in the past] to a sexy and feminine concept. It will be a new leaping point for Secret.”[1][2] TS Entertainment emphasized that the song is "armed with a fresh, new, musical style and a feminine concept". The agency added it planned to show an upgraded level of the bright and healthy woman image the group has been known for in the past.[1][2]

Between September 2-5, 2012, TS Entertainment released the teaser photo of the members. According to their stylist, the girls are going with a concept “based off the 1940s British ‘lady look’ and ‘espionage look’.” On September 02, Jeon Hyosung's teaser photo was released showcasing her with a short hair, red outfit, as well as a noticeably slimmer face and body.[3] On September 03, Song Jieun's teaser photo was released wearing a red outfit and with a short hair style.[4] On September 04, Zinger's teaser photo was released, wearing a red dress and a matching hair piece.[5] On September 05, Han Sunhwa's teaser photo was released, wearing a pink ensemble that is different from the other members and a braided hair style.[6] The same day, TS Entertainment released the group shot photo of the teasers with the same attire as their individual teasers.

On September 7, 2012, TS Entertainment released the MV teaser for "Poison".[7] Featuring an old Hollywood styled concept, the teaser is first seen that a valuable diamond has been stolen. Along with scenes of Hyosung entering a detective’s office, the teaser briefly showcases the other members in a bar. A repetitive saxophone tune is played throughout the teaser. The lyrics “you are my poison” are heard at the end.[8]

Composition and influence[edit]

"Poison" is an uptempo song with influences from R&B, Jazz and Hip-Hop music which utilizes repeating saxophone segments.[9] The song was written and produced by Kang Ji Won and Kim Ki Bum whom Secret had previously worked with their previous singles.[9] The audio mixing for the title track "Poison" was mixed by Grammy Award winning musician Lu Diaz, who have mixed tracks for Pitbull, DJ Khaled and other American artists.[9] And to raise the overall quality of the song, Chris Gehringer (from Sterling Sound) was called in from America for the audio mastering of "Poison". Gehringer has mastered the sounds of world famous artists such as Madonna, Jason Mraz, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and others.[9] Lyrically, the song describes the protagonist's feelings of being unable to break away even while knowing that as one falls in love, it only ends up becoming poison to the individual.[9]
