Owen Meredith Tweedy
Owen Meredith Tweedy was born in Dublin, Ireland on 22nd October, 1888, the son of Henry Colpoys Tweedy and Alice Maude Meredith the only daughter of Captain Thomas Meredith of Cloonamahon, County Sligo, Ireland.[1] He was educated at a private boarding school at Alden Lodge, in Clifden, Bristol England and later a at Caius College, Cambridge. He served in the Connaught Rangers in the First World War as a lieutenant and retired from service as a Captain in 1922. He was awarded the Victory Medal and the British Star for his service at Gallipoli in 1915. Much of his life was spent in the Middle East as a political journalist and as an adviser on Middle Eastern affairs. Owen retired in 1948 and spent much of his time in London.[2]
He spent each summer at Coney Island, County Sligo, Ireland, where he had spent much time as a child visiting his Meredith relatives.
He was the author of several books including The Dublin Tweedys, By Way Of The Sahara, Cairo To Persia And Back and Russia At Random, as well as other articles and stories.
Owen Tweedy died at his home on 5th May, 1960, only four years after publishing the book about his family. He was 72 years of age. He never married. A memoir, Gathering Moss, was published later. It was a compilation of information from his own writings and narrative by the editor, Tom Crowe,with help from his sister. Like the previous volumes it added greatly to the story of his family.[3]
