Çukur (The Pit)[edit]

Intro to ‘The Pit’[edit]

Çukur is a Turkish TV show that aired in 2017. It is based on the neighborhood named “The Pit” that is controlled by the Koçovar family. After the rupture of rules by an opposing group due to a drug ban, the family is forced to fight back and gain control of their district[1].

Çukur is known as the most dangerous part of Istanbul, Turkey whilst under the control of the Koçovalı family. Amongst many rules, the most important one involves the prohibition of drugs. Yet, once a foreign group of individuals invade Çukur and plan to disrupt this ban, retaliation occurs[2].

Plot/Storyline[edit]

Yamaç Koçovalı, left on his own at a young age, met Sena and married in Paris within 3 days. Within the same week, his brother Kahraman Koçovalı was murdered by the men of Vartolu. Once the father figure, Idris Koçovalı was informed of this he became temporarily paralyzed and taken to the intensive care unit. Yamaç's mother, Sultan Koçovalı, explains the situation to Yamaç[3]. The newly wedded couple returns home to Çukur to take revenge from Vartolu.

As the district contemplate that they have given up the entire Koçovalis family, the youngest son of the family, Yamaç, returns to Çukur which he had left behind to reconstruct a completely different life years ago with a new novel period to commence[4]. In his new journey to life he meets Sena, they fall in love and get married however, when the family he thought he had left behind comes between them, Sena follows Yamaç back to Çukur as he needs to yield his role as head of family as well as the district[5]. Sena is a gorgeous young lady who is just as stunning and unprofitable as she is dangerous. She trusts her endless love with Yamaç to be the start of their new beginning. With the re-entry of the family of Çukur and Yamaç into the life of this young couple who came together to be very happy till death do them apart, nothing will ever be the way they dreamed. In the beginning, she was resistant and impatient to go back to her undisturbed lifestyle, yet she will swiftly understand the true significance of the repeated phrase “çukur evimis”[6].

Once Vartolu, a young mafia man, arrives to Çukur with plans of setting up a drug laboratory, everything changes[7].

As he confronts the district with his plans along with his stubbornness, the possession of power becomes an issue. Along with becoming the center of all kinds of traffic, outside individuals also attempt to strip Idris Koçovali of power. By trying to conquer the order set within the family, a series of events surround them[8].

Throughout the series, shocking discoveries are made between the enemies from the outside and the Koçovali family, as they are more attached to Çukur than anyone assumed.

The series sets itself within a production of hostility and confrontation which occurs between the people of Çukur who are brought up the ‘old-fashioned’ mafia way with certain formalities, respect and values, especially towards women and children. Whereas the outside mafias do not respect these rules and generate their own[6].

Details/ Key notations[edit]

   The Tattoo[edit]

The ending of Season 1(episode 33), the true meaning of the tattoo was revealed. Everyone residing in Çukur, that also believes it is truly their home would have this tattoo imprinted anywhere on their body[9].

A flashback occurs to when Emmi, Idris’s right-hand man, explains it to Yamaç when he was 10.

The first symbol (<)

This symbol, represents ‘the roof’. It shows that if one day you come across a difficult situation that you want to run away from, come to Çukur[9].

Emmi explains, knock on the first door that comes in front of you, enter, show your mark and your complete. ‘That roof of that house will also become your roof’[10]. Meaning that you are immediately welcome.

The first point (.)

This dot demonstrates your mother, father, sister, wife and children are your responsibility as well as the responsibility or Çukur[9].

‘you will take care of them like your eyes’

The second point (.)

This symbolizes the family that you have outside, your blood siblings, your friends, the men on the same path as you. They will take a bullet for you when it is necessary, as you will for them[9].

The third point (.)

This indicates the biggest family, Koçovalı family[9]. ‘once you get this tattoo, they will become your mother, father, grandfather, siblings, aunts and everything’ they will protect you, and won’t leave you hungry. You will love them and respect them[10]

The last symbol (>)

This is Çukur (The Pit), the house. ‘everyone has a house in this life, our home is Çukur'[10]

Basically with all the symbols combined, it means

With a roof on top of us and Çukur under our feet, as long as there is family inside it, in this world, there is no death to us.

Once you have the tattoo, even if you leave Çukur, Çukur will not leave you[9].
