User:Michig/BLP thoughts

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Even well-sourced, balanced and neutral BLPs can have inaccuracies and offensive claims added. While these will usually be reverted quickly, they will still for a time be part of an article that is not only available to view on Wikipedia but is syndicated to multiple other locations. I therefore have come to the following views, that in addition to the existing policies on BLPs:

  1. BLPs with no strong claim to notability[1] should be deleted
  2. BLPs without cast-iron clear-cut notability based on the existence of multiple significant coverage in reliable sources should be deleted if requested by the subject.
  3. Any details not vital to the understanding of the subject's notability and not supported by multiple reliable sources should be removed if requested by the subject, e.g. date of birth, details of life before becoming notable, details of personal life and family.
  4. Any details published in tabloid-type sources invading the privacy of a living person (i.e. not directly relating to the subject's area of notability and not freely provided by the subject) should be removed if requested by the subject.
  5. BLPs of clearly notable subjects where genuine concerns have been raised by the subject regarding inaccuracies and/or attacks should be trimmed to basic facts and details core to the subject's notability, and protected. Edits may be requested on the article's talk page and added if consensus is to do so, taking into account the reasons for protection.
  6. BLPs should not be editable by anonymous and new editors (indefinitely semi-protected) if there has been a significant history of BLP violations or it is felt likely that there will be in the future. Edits may be requested on the article's talk page and added if consensus is to do so, taking into account the reasons for protection.

Notes[edit]

  1. ^ By notability I mean encyclopedic relevance - this may be different to many other people's definition
