OZYMANDIAS of EGYPT

by

Percy Bysshe Shelley

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said:—Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shatter'd visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamp'd on these lifeless things,
The hand that mock'd them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains: round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Introduction[edit]

If you managed to survive high school, chances are you had to read this poem for Humanities class and were later forced to write a long essay discussing what it meant. Needless to say, it made an impact on me, enough to recall the name Ozymandias years later when I was trying to create a user's name for Wikipedia. Unfortunately, I was a Johny-come-lately, and some magnificent bastard beat me to the punch. Frustated, I attached the word "Mighty" in front of it, to clearly differentiate myself from that other user. Yep, that will show'em to use the greek name of an ancien Egyptian's Pharaoh everyone had to read a poem about!

Putting my sophmoric rantings aside, I hope to add more in the future, please bear with me.

Booklist[edit]

A (small) list of some of the many books I remember reading once. These are the titles that came to my head the fastest, in no particular order:

The Hobbit
Personaly, I liked it a whole bunch more than the movie. Go figure.
The Lord of the Rings
Yeah, so I like Tolkien, you got a problem with that you damn Trekkie?
The Naked and the Death
Gritty WWII book about the Pacific front, highly recomend it. Fuggit!
Don Quíjote de la Mancha
Cervantes' tragic hero, and the birth of Spanish literature.

Recomended Listening[edit]

Music is good for you, it is known to estimulate hair growth and keeps rust off your Buick's undercarriage. Here are the titles of some albums I have enjoyed over the years:

Weezer (1994)
The blue album, do I need to say more?
Pinkerton
Man, I wish I could have catched their live tour.
Weezer (2000)
The green album, quite a comeback.
Maladroid
Do you start to see a pattern here?

The other Wikipedia user, Ozymandias, is known to be neither a bastard nor mangnificent.
