Group Name: A Number of Names (ANON)
Members: Paul Lesley, Roderick Simpson, Sterling Jones
Genre: Proto-Techno, Early Detroit Techno, Italian Disco
Location: Detroit Michigan
Years active: 1981-2002
Background
During the summer of 1981, Detroit high schoolers Paul Lesley and Sterling Jones decided to act on their long-discuessed plans to form a music group. Lesley contributed the lead vocals and bass synth, Jones wrote the lyrics, and Roderick Simpson, who was a less public member of teh group, played the main melody.
Sharevari derived its name from one of Detroits premier party clubs, Charivari. It first aired during a club night at a Charivari party. Detroit radio star, Electrifying Mojo was in attendance. After seeing the positive reception of the song, invited the group onto a WGPR show. Not having a name for the group at the time, the group asked the Mojo what he thought, thus birthing the moniker, A Number of Names or ANON.
While they only produced two tracks publicly, their seminal work, Charivari, would be remixed and reproduced multiple times through the next two decades.
The group reformed for the Detroit Electronic Music Festivals in 2001 and 2002.
Their debut album “Sharevari” was groundbreaking in a lot of ways. Originally recorded back in 1981 at the crossroads of disco, new wave, house, and techno - the track fused lo-fi drums, sinister synths, and raw vocals to create a unique and freaky vibe unlike anything else at the time. As the story goes, "Sharevari" is a song about the stylish, forward-thinking Detroit club scene, specifically a club called Charivari (named after a New York clothing store), that laid the groundwork for the techno revolution to come.
