Comments from other Muslim scholars[edit]

Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal said, "Abdurrahman ibn Mahdi is more knowledgeable than Yahya al Qahthan. If there is a distinction between Abdurrahman's and Waqi's opinion, then Abdurrahman is stronger because he is closer to the time of revelation. Between them there are about 50 issues distinction of opinion, and after I carefully studied them then I find the side of Abdurrahman is more factual. " Imam Ahmad also said, "Ibn Mahdi is one with the most hadith memorized, he is the one who are tsiqah (reliable)."
