Call It Whatever is the debut studio album by American singer and actress Bella Thorne, scheduled to be released in 2014. The album is going to be more than one genre of music. Thorne first came prominence in 2010, starring in the Disney Channel Original Series Shake It Up, and officially made her singing debut alongside co-star Zendaya when the duo released "Watch Me" as a single from the show's first soundtrack album. The following year she released a solo single, "TTYLXOX" and was eventually signed by Hollywood Records in March 2013.

In March 2013, Bella Thorne announced she'd been signed to Hollywood Records, and began working on her debut album.[1] On 23 April 2013, she discussed details about her upcoming album, telling MTV: “What fans can expect is [for it] just to be very different from anyone, because I don’t like to be one of those artists where you can be like: ‘Oh yeah, I know them from that song.’ All my songs are very different from each other. So I don’t want to be known as only one genre.”[2] On 28 March 2014, Thorne announced her debut album would be named ast single, and confirmed it will consist of eleven songs.[3]
“Everything is very different so it is hard to say I have some Coachella music, I have some R&B, some more Ke$ha talk-y music, I wanted there to be a song for everyone I don’t want it to just be you hear a song on the radio and say, ‘Oh that kinda sounds like Bella Thorne,’ like she would sing a song like that. I want it to be so versatile and different.”

In a Billboard article published on May 2, 2014, it was revealed that the album would be called Call It Whatever, and the release date would be June 24, 2014.[5] Thorne revealed the reason why the album took so long was because "I really wanted to work on my voice. I never sang before, and I didn't want to put an album out that I wasn't proud of, or that was Auto-tuned or anything like that. I waited so that I could take a lot of vocal classes, so that I could work on my voice every day".[6][7] Thorne confirmed that inevitable comparisons to former Disney stars Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez, that she would not go in either direction.[8] Bella spoke about the album's direction in the form of its genre's. saying "Call It Whatever" is my youngest-sounding song, This song is definitely for my younger audience. I don't want to eliminate them, but my album is geared a little bit older. I have some more Indie type of songs, some hip-hop, some with an 80s feel, and I have dance music on there."[8] Bella also stated, "I want to try everything, And I want to be great at everything, if it's the last thing I do."[8]
In February 2014, Bella Thorne described the sound of her album as having differentiation, and several songs being aimed at a variety of audiences.[4] Thorne, who said she’s been listening to a wide variety of music to get inspiration, from Usher to Destiny’s Child to Band of Horses, hints that there will be a collaboration on the album, but unfortunately for “Shake it Up” fans, it won’t be with her former co-star Zendaya, at least not right now, “I think for sure we will, she is so concentrated on her music she has really an incredible voice and she’s gone so far and so into it, That would just be awesome, I think especially when we are older that would just be so cool.”[4]

The album's self-titled lead single "Call It Whatever" leaked on May 13, three days before the intended world premiere on May 16th. Subsequently, Bella called into Radio Disney that same afternoon to premiere it on air. The song was released later that night on iTunes, instead of the original date of May 17.[6]

"Call It Whatever" is a single by American actress and recording artist Bella Thorne. It premiered on May 14, 2014, on Radio Disney and was released by Hollywood Records onto iTunes the same day, as the lead single from her upcoming debut studio album of the same name.[10]
Background[edit]
"Call It Whatever" was produced by Paro and co-written by Par Westerland, Rickard Goransson and Skyler Stonestreet, the release comes roughly a year and a half after Thorne signed to Hollywood Records, the home of such as Selena Gomez as well as other female stars like Lucy Hale and Demi Lovato.[8] When the deal was finalized, Thorne was already starring on the Disney Channel sitcom "Shake It Up" along with co-star Zendaya, whose single "Replay" became a Hot 100 in 2013.[8] Thorne released the song "TTYLXOX" off the "Shake It Up: Live 2 Dance" soundtrack in 2012.[8]
Thorne first heard the song while in Africa filming the movie Blended and got the chorus stuck in her head. She thought the song was "fun" upon hearing it for the first time and decided it would be a good match for her.[11] Thorne spoke about the song saying "Call It Whatever is my youngest-sounding song, this song is definitely for my younger audience".[8]
Composition[edit]
"Call It Whatever" has been described as a classic autotune-assisted bubblegum pop anthem that is radio friendly and has reminiscences of previous Disney stars.[12] The song is an upbeat, flirty pop tune with a playful nature. Thorne's debut has been called "mainstream" and "following in the footsteps of many Disney Channel stars before her."[13] Lyrically, Thorne said the song is about "a boy and a girl that didn't really know what to call [their relationship] so they're calling it whatever because they don't care what anybody else calls it."[11]
Critical Reception[edit]
Alex Kritselis from Bustle.com gave an negative-mixed review, describing the song as "hardly a masterpiece" also saying "In fact, in many ways, it’s kind of a disaster. Thorne’s barely there vocals are absolutely dripping with auto-tune. At times, she barely even sounds human. And yet… the song is so damn catchy."[14]
Thorne gained a lot of comparisons to other Disney stars who started music careers similarly to Thorne.[8] She denied the comparisons by saying "I don’t think about anything close to that. I don’t think, ‘Well, Miley went this way, and Selena went that way, so I have to go in the middle. That’s not it. I’m just being me. My song is called ‘Call It Whatever.’ You can call me whatever, if you like me or not like me. I really don’t care.”[8]
Music video[edit]
On March 30, 2014, Bella Thorne revealed behind-the-scenes pictures of the cover shoot for her single artwork, wearing sparkling pink lip gloss.[15] On 6 April 2014. Bella released shots of her filming the upcoming music video for her debut single, wearing numerous outfits and practicing dance routines.[16]
A music video for the song was filmed at Los Angeles in early April 2014.[17] The video was directed by Mickey Finnegan and premiered on Vevo on May 29.[18][19] It shows Thorne dressed up as a waitress in the 1950s diner. The video takes place in Cadillac Jack's Diner in San Fernando Valley, the same location used in the music videos "Want U Back" by Cher Lloyd and "Fuck You" by CeeLo Green, as well as "La Da Dee" by Cody Simpson and Haley Reinhart's "Free."[8]
The music video begins with Thorne dressed up as a waitress in the 1950s diner. Thorne pictured dancing around the counter and throughout the diner while trying to get the attention of her crush (Garrison Lambert).[20] In other scenes, she appears in an quick change into a gold mini-skirt and a sparkly crop top that she wore over a grey T-shirt dancing in front of her crush's pink Cadillac.[21] The music video ends, when Thorne is seen singing that song out loud, where she leaves embarrassed as her crush and his friends look on.[21]
