From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Acidcore is a subgenre of electronic dance music derived from acid techno and hardcore, emerging in the mid-1990s in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Notoriety[edit]

It was, at the time, one of the most played and danced to music at teknivals, with artists and groups such as Furious, Architek, and Total Resistance[1]. One notable artist with several releases is Lasse Steen (DJ Choose)[2] · [3]. Some releases can also be found on gabber compilations, such as Progressive Hardcore by Underground Warriors on Thunderdome XIX - Cursed By Evil Sickness.

Characteristics[edit]

Acidcore is characterized by the sound of the Roland TB-303[4] and short, distorted kicks, accompanied by rapid rhythms from around 155-170 BPM. Looped breakbeats sometime accompany the kick. The screeching, high-pitched sound is characteristic of acid techno. Some of the labels characterizing the genre are Drop Bass Network, Neurotrope Records, and Acid Anonymous. In 1998, the style appeared most often in free parties in the form of DJ mixes and live performances such as WoXo and Capsule corps. In the 2000s, new artists emerged such as Ignite[5], Mr. Gasmask[6] and Ruffneck (who mixes industrial hardcore and acidcore), during events dedicated to acidcore such as Retro Acid in Belgium[7].
