Mutual Assurance Society of Virginia

The Mutual Assurance Society of Virginia,[1] is a property and insurance casualty company writing primarily home insurance.[2] The company, also known as "Mutual Assurance Society, against Fire on Buildings, of the State of Virginia," was incorporated by the Virginia General Assembly on December 22, 1794. The society's plan was suggested by William Frederick Ast, a Prussian then residing in Richmond, Virginia. The Society is "alleged to have been modeled after a system of mutual guarantee" introduced by Frederick the Great. The building at 1014 East Main Street was built after 1865 and demolished in 1918.[3] Once located in one of the first skyscrapers in Richmond, the Mutual Assurance Society offices are now located in a smaller building at 4001 Fitzhugh Avenue, still in Richmond.[4][5]
