Reni Gower is an American artist, professor, and curator.

Academic career[edit]

Gower was an artist in residence at James Madison University[1] After 37 years, Professor Gower retired from the Painting and Printmaking Department at Virginia Commonwealth University in December 2018. In addition to her studio practice, she curates award winning traveling exhibitions and is available for workshops in papercutting, encaustic, and professional practices for artists. She serves on the College Art Assosciation's Services to Artists Committee and she is a past board member of SECAC. She holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Syracuse University, a Master of Arts degree from University of Minnesota-Duluth, and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Ms. Gower currently resides in Virginia.

Curating[edit]

In addition to her studio practice, she curates award winning traveling exhibitions during which she presents public juror statements and workshops in papercutting, encaustic, and professional practices for artists.

Compulsory Measures, an exhibition curated by Reni Gower, was presented by McDaniel College's Department of Art and Art History in the Rice Gallery.[2]

Exhibitions[edit]

In 2018 Knotworks was an exhibition shown at the Offsite Gallery of the World Trade Center in Norfolk, Virginia by Reni Gower and Cuba native Jorge Benitez, an assistant professor in the Communication Arts Department at Virginia Commonwealth University.[3]

Awards[edit]

In 2012 Gower won the SECAC "Award for Outstanding Exhibition and Catalog of Contemporary Materials" for the exhibition Papercuts: The Contemporary Art of Papercutting.[5]
