Red Hook High School, established in 1962, is a public high school located in Red Hook, New York.

History[edit]

The Red Hook Central School district was founded on October 26, 1937 after a fire burned down the Union Free School District building.[3] Due to community growth, Red Hook High School was built in 1962 for grades 9 through 12.[3] In 1991 the building was expanded, with an added technology wing and two additional hallways branching out to the west.

Student Life[edit]

Academics[edit]

In 2012, Red Hook was ranked 38th out of 370 schools in New York State, and 221st out of 21,776 high schools across the nation.[4] Due to changes in the ranking formula, Red Hook is currently unranked. The school was also ranked on the AP honor roll, a distinction granted to only 367 schools nationwide.[4] Over 80% of students continue on to 2 or 4 year programs at institutions of higher education.[1]

Red Hook offers a diverse range of classes for every level of ability. Forty seven percent of students participate in the AP program, and thirty eight percent take IB exams.[2] Additionally, Regents and Honors levels classes are offered in most subjects including the three foreign languages (Spanish, French, and German).[1] There are three degree programs offered: Regents, Regents with Advanced Designation, and International Baccalaureate. Classes can also be taken through the BOCES program in Salt Point, New York.[4]

Music[edit]

The school has choral and concert band programs, both of which are regularly recognized at their respective NYSSMA programs. In 2013 the band, under the direction of Mr. Brian Zeller, received a Gold with Distinction (the highest honor). The chorus received Gold under the direction of Mrs. Amy Cornwall-Robinson. The band and chorus also have their own shows including the winter and spring concerts as well as the combined vocal and instrumental variety show known as Varisms.[4] Every year, over 100 students participate in NYSSMA Solo Festival, many of whom continue on to play or sing at NYSSMA All-State, in NYSSBDA Honor Band/Choir, and other prestigious groups.[4] There are also after school ensembles for students who want to further their musical education, including Improv Club, Jazz Band, and Vocal Jazz,

Athletics[edit]

Red Hook maintains a very active student body, and participates in field hockey, football, volleyball, lacrosse, cross-country, golf, basketball, tennis, baseball, softball, track and field, wrestling, and soccer.[1] The school is part of the Mid-Hudson Athletic League and is in the NYSPHSAA Section IX district. The teams also maintain very high academic standards, and many of their teams receive the NYSPHSAA Scholar Team Award every year; the requirement for this award is to have an overall team average of 90.0% or higher.[4]

Performing Arts[edit]

Although the school does not have an auditorium, it still maintains a performing arts program. Most years the performing arts club puts on a play in the fall, the school musical takes place during early spring, and a student directed play will take place towards the end of the school year. Past performances include large scale musicals, such as West Side Story, to stage adaptations of popular movies like Princess Bride, to classics such as A View from the Bridge. The school has won awards including Best Musical and Best Director at the Hudson Valley High School Theatre Awards which are given out by Dutchess Community College.

Red Hook Broadcasting Company[edit]

The main center of student technology in Red Hook High School is in its own local television station. Its primary purpose is to broadcast the morning announcements, but it also functions as a club in that it produces the yearly Mr. Red Hook male beauty pageant. In addition to this it airs student produced content as well as informational segments covering school sports and the weather, some of which can be seen on their YouTube channel.
