Louis A. Stirn (78 Howard Avenue) who died in 1962 at the age of 98. He was a silk importer who is credited with bringing the seed of the mimosa (silk tree) from China to Staten Island. Now hundreds of these graceful trees add beauty to the Island as they flower during the summer months (46). (c.1864-1962), a silk importer built his home in 1908 at 77 Howard Avenue. In 2006, the Stirn mansion became a New York City Landmark and is now called Casa Belvedere.[1]
