Early Life and Family[edit]
William Greene Ward Sr. was born in New York City in 1802, and was raised in both Rhode Island and on Long Island in New York. He went into business, becoming a member of the family firm of John Ward & Co. William G. Ward, Sr. married Abbey Maria Hall, with whom he had six children: William Greene (Jr.); Charles Henry; Anne Catherine; John (who died at 1 year old); John; and Prescott Hall. William Greene Ward (Jr.) was a graduate of Columbia College, and also went into business at the firm of Ward & Co. He married Emily Graham McKnight, after which he built their home "Oneata" on Grymes Hill, Staten Island. They had three children: Maria (Violet) Emily Graham McKnight; Leila Eliza Prescott, who died before her first birthday; and Caroline Constantia. Violet Ward was quite involved in bicycling and other athletic pursuits, and wrote a book, "Bicycling for Ladies." Charles Henry Ward was a banker, whose son was Henry M. Ward. John Ward was also a graduate of Columbia College, and served in the military as well. He was both a lawyer and an author; he wrote "Campaigns of the Twelfth Infantry, N.G.S.N.Y., 1861-62-63." Prescott Hall Ward was also a lawyer, who graduated from Columbia College Law School.
Military Career[edit]
He served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Twelfth Regiment, NYSM in 1861, a Colonel in the same regiment in 1862, and later became a Brigadier-General in the First Brigade, 1st Div. NGSNY.
