The Futamata Tunnel Explosion (Japanese: 二又トンネル爆発事故 futamata ton'neru bakuhatsu jiko) was an explosion on 12 November 1945, following the detonation of Imperial Japanese Army gunpowder, hidden within a railroad tunnel near Soeda, Fukuoka, by U.S. forces. The entire tunnel was destroyed, along with many nearby houses. 149 people were injured and 135 houses damaged.

Incident[edit]

Approximately one hour after the allied forces retreated from the tunnel, at 16:30, flames were bursting from the mouth of the tunnel, reaching a river more than a hundred metres away and the houses across from it. The flames spread from house to house while residents tried to put it out.

At 17:20, falling sediment from the collapsed tunnel finally extinguished the fire.
