Career

Dick Bernard was a Soybean Plant Breeder at the US Regional Soybean Laboratory at Urbana, Illinois and Curator of the USDA Soybean Germplasm Collection from 1954 to 1988. He had experimental plots at the historic Univeristy of Illinois South Farms in the University of Illinois Experimental Dairy Farm Historic Districtfrom 1954 to 2011. He developed phytophthora sojae-resistant seed varieties: Hawkeye 63, Clark 63, and Harosoy 63 which became available to growers in 1964. After retirement from the USDA and University of Illinois, he continued research in edible soybeans. He developed a series of Gardensoy edamame (100 soybeans weigh > 20 grams) soybean varieties. He also worked to develop natto soybeans (100 soybeans < 10 grams) to be grown in the US. <--developed disease resistant varieties of soybeans widely used throughtout the US from 1964 through 19xx -->

Honors

Received the National Science Foundation Fellowship in 1950. American Society of Agronomy Fellow in November 1969. Made Honorary Life Member of the American Soybean Association in 1970. December of 1978 he received the Genetics and Plant Breeding Award from the National Council of Commercial Plant Breeders. In 1979 he received: Agronomic Research Award from the American Society of Agronomy, Paul A. Funk Award from the Funk Foundation, Outstanding Service Award from the National Soybean Processors Association. In 1980 He received Outstanding Soybean Research Award from Land of Lincoln Soybean Association. May of 1982 He received the Distinguished Service Award from the US Department of Agriculture. In 1985 he was named Crop Science Society of America Fellow. 1989 he received Honorary Membership in the Illinois Crop Improvement Association and Feb 1990 Honorary Life Member in the Commercial Soybean Breeders Association Richard L.
