Pride (stylized in all caps) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Gengoroh Tagame. It was serialized in the gay mens' magazine G-men from 1997 to 1999.
Plot[edit]
Third-year university student Tetsuya Ōhashi begins a sexual relationship with Dr. Shibazaki, a psychology professor at his school, after they encounter each other while cruising. After several liaisons, Shibazaki admonishes the arrogant and dominant Ōhashi for his prideful nature, a criticism Ōhashi fixates on to the point of becoming impotent. When Ōhashi later confronts Shibazaki, he responds that Ōhashi needs to learn his "true self" (ホントのじぶん, hontō no jibun), and proposes an experiment to prove that Ōhashi is actually a masochist. Shibazaki – himself a BDSM master – trains Ōhashi over the subsequent year to become his slave, placing him into numerous scenarios of bondage, erotic humiliation, and sexual fetishism.
Though Ōhashi struggles under the strictness of his training, he soon comes to delight in his newfound role as a submissive. Their training culminates in a demonstration in which Ōhashi is placed in front of Shibazaki's psychology class in a gimp mask and made to ejaculate, though the fallout from the unorthodox lesson results in Shibazaki resigning from the school and accepting a teaching position in Berlin. Shibazaki invites Ōhashi to join him, which he joyously accepts. He brands Ōhashi's buttocks with an "S" (for 'slave'), and commends him for having achieved a "slave's pride"; they kiss, and depart for Berlin together.
Production and release[edit]
Pride author Gengoroh Tagame desribed the series as "a fantasy I wrote as fundamentally a practitioner of SM play", stating that he wished to create the series for a readership who feel restricted by "the limits of self in real society beyond SM".[1] He characterized his intent for the series as a desire to create an erotic manga that was also a Bildungsroman.[1]
Tagame cited Mr. Benson, a 1983 erotic novel by John Preston about a gay man's search for an S&M master, as a significant influence on Pride.[2]
Pride was originally serialized in the gay mens' magazine G-men from January 1997 (issue 12) to December 1999 (issue 47). It was subsequently published as three collected volumes by publisher Furukawa Shobu under their Baukdan Comics imprint.[1]
