My education went from a heavy emphasis on Latin and Greek through Psychology and Philosophy. But my career took me into computing, where my interest in language led me to projects in which I developed and applied the ideas that underpin the Language Machine. This trail began when I was working with David Hendry, who saw that the rewriting rules of a grammar can usefully be rethought as going from the sentences to the grammar and not from the grammar to the sentences.
