Ocean Acidification Effects on squid[edit]
Mineral structures called statoliths, which help the squid sense movement, were smaller in the squid from acidified water. The statoliths also had more pores and were oddly-shaped.[1]
A study performed by PLOS ONE concluded that Atlantic longfin squid eggs took longer to hatch in acidified water. Additionally, they found that squid statoliths, an internal structure that helps the squid sense movement, were smaller and malformed in those squid placed in sea water with a lower pH. .[2]

The measure was prompted by a study which found the number of cuttlefish around Point Lowly near Whyalla has dropped by 90 percent over the past 13 years.
Divers became concerned in June last year after far fewer cuttlefish than expected were spotted during their breeding season.
The report reveals a decline from 183,000 cuttlefish in 1999 to about 18,500.
The cuttlefish have become a local tourist attraction and the decline prompted calls from environmentalists for tighter fishing restrictions, with fears the creatures were on the brink of disappearing altogether.[3]
